Install Instructions

  • Note: If you have previously installed McAfee from the old stand alone installer (ie: you have McAfee, but not the agent), you must uninstall the McAfee VSE before installing the agent.
  1. Download the latest version of McAfee Agent software to your desktop here.
    • XP/2000 – Double-click on the URI-McAfee-Agent.exe file to run it.
    • Vista/Windows7 – Right click the URI-McAfee-Agent.exe file and select ‘Run As Administrator’.
  2. The Agent installer will open and install. When it is finished it will say “Setup is complete.”
  3. If prompted by the windows firewall, allow an exception for McAfee. If you do not allow an excpetion, the updates will not run.
  4. At this point, the Agent will automatically point to the new server and pull the VirusScan program and install it. All of this is done silently, so there is no progress bar.
  5. This entire process can take up to an hour to fully install the components. If you wish to speed up this process, follow these steps:
    1. Right-Click on the McAfee logo in the bottom right hand of your screen and click McAfee Agent Status Monitor…
    2. A window opens up (usually in the background, click on the window in the task bar) and on the top right is a button that says Collect and Send Props. Click that and let it finish.
  6. Note: You can install this agent from off campus, but until you are on the URI network, you will not get VirusScan.

  1. Right click on the McAfee icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
  2. Select Scan Computer For… -> Threats from that menu.
  3. In the On-demand scan properties, click “Add”
  4. Add the items “All Local Drives,” “Memory for Rootkits,” “Running Processes,” and “Registry.”
    • you may wish to save this setting as your default by selecting “Save as Default” on the right hand side of the window.

Before you run a scan, you may wish to delete your internet cache, cookies, and temporary files. Instructions for this can be found here

  2. Select Scan Computer For… -> Threats from that menu.
  3. Select “Start” from the right hand side of the window. The scan will run.

  2. Print these instructions.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. At the system start screen, before Windows begins booting up, press the f8 key on your keyboard.
