Free antivirus solutions are available to all current URI faculty, staff and students. The University of Rhode Island uses McAfee for its Windows and Macintosh antivirus solution. It is important that no antivirus be installed before installing any other antivirus solution. Failure to remove previously installed antivirus solutions prior to installing McAfee antivirus may result in system instability. McAfee antivirus solutions can be obtained from the linked articles in the following sections.
Windows 10 and Mcafee VSE 8.8.0 issues
In July 2015 Microsoft has released Windows 10 RTM (Release to Manufacture) as a free download to update licensed Microsoft Operating Systems.
The beginning of August 2015 functionality problems of the managed version of Mcafee’s Viruscanner VSE 8.8.0 under Windows 10 (RTM) surfaced. ITS/Security has been in contact with Mcafee for a solution to this issue. A required extended VSE patch is scheduled to be available the beginning of September 2015. In the meantime ITS/Security (together with other vendors) is working with Mcafee on a test release of VSE 8.8.0 patch 6.
We expect to distribute the production level VSE 8.8.0 patch 6 on or after September 4, 2015 and hopefully before the beginning of the Fall semester.
McAfee Agent- ePo Client
The McAfee Agent allows for managed policy and task operation of antimalware products through the ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) server. The Information Security Office (ISO) maintain a central console to set and administer security guidelines for computer systems within the University network through this system.
The Agent is the University supported method of installation for all Windows McAfee products. When it is first installed it will immediately attempt to contact the server to download and install the latest security products and configurations.
The Information Technology Services at the University of Rhode Island has purchased a site license for McAfee antivirus solutions. The license permits the use of this software on all University-owned computers and on all computers owned by employees and students of the University that reside on campus. This does not permit the use of this software on home computers owned by employees or students. This software is currently available for Windows Workstations (XP – Windows 8.1) and Servers (Server 2000 – Server 2012), and Macintosh OS X 10.2 and higher.
Once an employee or student leaves the University or terminates employment, the user is no longer entitled to McAfee product updates and support from the University. This license to use the anti-virus software is conditioned upon your compliance with the McAfee End User Agreement.
